£160.00

The mbira nyunga nyunga (African kalimba) is a beautiful 15 key lamellophone from Zimbabwe where it culturally plays an entertainment role during social gatherings and is often used by musicians in popular music. It was introduced from the Tete province of Mozambique and developed by Jeke Tapera in the 1960s at Kwanongoma College of African Music (now United College of Music) in Bulawayo, and has since grown enormously in popularity across southern Africa.

The Mbira Nyunga Nyunga has been made popular by internationally acclaimed mainstream Zimbabwean artists such as Chiwoniso Maraire and Hope Masike. The instrument’s sound is soothing and beautiful, and it is relatively easy to learn and play.

This mbira nyunga nyunga comes with the following features:

  • 15 keys

  • Tuned in F

  • Includes an electric audio jack in the back

  • Comes with a stylish African-print travel bag

These mbiras are handmade in Harare, Zimbabwe and therefore each one will be slightly different to the picture displayed. The travel bags are handmade in Gaborone, Botswana.

We offer private and group lessons on the mbira nyunga nyunga. More information available here.
