Set of 2 Traditional Botswana Baskets - Swallow's Tail

Botswana is well known for its beautiful baskets, typically woven by the talented women from remote rural areas bordering the Kalahari Desert and the Okavango Delta.

For centuries, baskets have been an essential part of life in Botswana. The intricate abstract designs are reflections of nature and traditional society, and require great skill to produce. Although broader in styles and depictions these days, traditional designs typically consisted of a few patterns that portrayed the natural world and were produced using few colors.

This basket was made in the rural village of Lentswelemoriti on the boarder to South Africa in the eastern horn of Botswana.

The pattern on this basket is known as Swallow’s Tail and it symbolizes life and good fortune. The arrival of the swallows in November after their migration from Europe signals the start of the rainy season.

This lovely basket measures 9 inches (23 cm) in diameter and 2.5 inches (6 cm) in depth. It makes for a perfect wall decoration, or a beautiful addition to your living room or kitchen.
