The Mbira Nyunga Nyunga (also known as Kalimba) is a beautiful 15 key lamellophone from Zimbabwe where it culturally plays an entertainment role during social gatherings and ceremonies. It was introduced from the Tete province of Mozambique and developed by Jeke Tapera in the 1960s at the Kwanongoma College of African music (now United College of Music) in Bulawayo and has since grown enormously in popularity across southern Africa. Its sound is soothing and beautiful, and its more traditional sister variant, the mbira nhare, is still today used in traditional ceremonies as a communication tool with one’s ancestors.

The Mbira Nyunga Nyunga has been made popular by internationally acclaimed mainstream Zimbabwean artists such as Chiwoniso Maraire and Hope Masike.
